Edward and Caroline

Édouard, a pianist, and his wife Caroline are getting ready for an evening that could matter for his career: he is to play at the house of Caroline's rich uncle. The preparation falls apart over an argument about Caroline's dress. A small remark grows, a door is slammed, and the two of them are separated before the evening has even begun. Then they go to the same party separately. Jacques Becker's film takes place almost entirely in two spaces: a small attic flat and a large drawing room. Class difference sits underneath every scene; the rich relatives want to buy not the music but the musician. Becker looks at everyday detail, at bickering and at doorways to describe how a marriage works. Daniel Gélin and Anne Vernon play the couple. It is counted among the best loved chamber comedies in French cinema.
