What Rendezvous in July Is About
In post-war Paris a group of young people in their early twenties are trying to work out what to do with themselves. One wants to become an ethnographer and go to Africa, one is writing a play, one plays the trumpet in jazz clubs, and they all meet in the same cafés and the same cellars. Love, jealousy and shortage of money press on that enthusiasm; some carry out what they dreamed of and some step back. Jacques Becker’s hundred minute French film recorded the youth of its own moment together with those young people; Daniel Gélin and Brigitte Auber appear. It was completed in 1949.
