Eight Taels of Gold

Ba Leung Kam, who drives a taxi in New York, goes back to his village in China after many years away and finds that his family has moved to Taishan. A relative, Wu Tsui Po, who knows the road, goes with him. At first the two cannot get along at all, and the longer the journey lasts the fonder of each other they become. His family wants him to marry and take a wife back to America with him, but Ba is too shy to say what he feels, and she has a fiance coming from America. This is the last of the three films Mabel Cheung made about migration, after The Illegal Immigrant and An Autumn’s Tale. Sammo Hung and Sylvia Chang appear in the hundred minute Hong Kong production, completed in 1989.
