Alisa grows up in a shack by the sea, quiet to the point of barely speaking, and convinced that whatever she wishes for comes true. By seventeen she is in Moscow, a city plastered with advertising and organised entirely around money, where that conviction buys her nothing whatsoever. Anna Melikyan uses Andersen's Little Mermaid as the loosest possible starting point and keeps comedy and grief inside the same frame throughout, letting the images carry what she has to say about modern Russia. It won the World Cinema directing award at Sundance in 2008 and the FIPRESCI prize in Berlin.
