El bulto

Lauro is a left wing press photographer. On 10 June 1971, while photographing the day a state backed paramilitary group attacked a student demonstration in Mexico City, the Corpus Christi massacre, he is badly beaten and falls into a coma. He wakes twenty years later to find his wife remarried, his children grown, and a country he does not recognise. Gabriel Retes runs this premise in a comic register in his 1992 film, but the question underneath it is serious: what is it like to be the only person who remembers an event nobody was allowed to discuss for years? The film was made at the moment when that day could finally be talked about openly in Mexico.
