What El camino Is About
With only hours left before he leaves his village for the city to study, Daniel remembers his childhood: his family, his friends, the people of the village and all the summer days spent there pass in front of him one by one. The story is set in a rural village in postwar Spain and asks as much about what leaving takes away as about what it brings. Ana Mariscal’s ninety one minute Spanish film was adapted from Miguel Delibes’s novel of 1950 and was the first cinema adaptation of any of his work; Mariscal wrote the screenplay with José Zamit. Jose Antonio Mejías plays Daniel, with Maribel Martín in the cast. It was completed in 1964.
