Ugyen, who does not want to teach and plans to go to Australia and become a singer, is posted to Lunana for his final assignment. The village is in the Himalayas, eight days on foot from the nearest road, with no electricity and not even a blackboard in the school. The children meet him at the entrance to the village and the man is thinking about leaving before he thinks about staying. Pawo Choyning Dorji shot it in Lunana itself, above four thousand metres, with most of the villagers playing themselves and the cameras charged from solar panels. The story neither exalts the countryside nor judges the man who wants to leave. It became the first film from Bhutan nominated for an Oscar. Who it is for: viewers who like calm, human-centred films and high mountain landscape. Who it is not for: anyone expecting dramatic transformation, since the film promises very little.
