Viridiana

A young woman about to take her vows visits her uncle as a last duty. After his death she takes over the farm and decides to shelter beggars there. The film tests goodness and lets it fail: her charity collapses on contact with what the people she helps actually want. The narrative delivers this as cold observation rather than a moral, and the famous table scene openly imitates the Last Supper. Luis Bunuel directed, having returned to Spain from exile to make it. It won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, was then banned in Spain and condemned by the Vatican. A real warning: the film contains an attempted rape and degrading scenes involving the beggars. Bunuel absolves nobody, neither the devout nor the poor.
