Francisco, wealthy and conservative, sees Gloria at a church ceremony and becomes fixated on her. He takes her from her fiance and marries her. After the marriage jealousy and paranoia take over everything: doors locked, interrogations at night, imagined betrayals. Gloria eventually escapes. Francisco loses his mind and takes refuge in a monastery. Luis Bunuel directed; it opened on 9 July 1953. The source is Mercedes Pinto's novel Pensamientos. Bunuel said he put things from his own life into the script and that there was something of him in the protagonist. He worked fast under studio pressure and later said he was not satisfied with the result. On its first release in Mexico neither audiences nor critics took it seriously. The verdict reversed completely: Rotten Tomatoes sits at 100 percent and Cahiers du Cinema counted it among the essential works of cinema. The most striking detail is clinical: the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan screened it for his students as a case study in paranoia. Who it is for: viewers who like obsession and jealousy told from inside, and Bunuel's Mexican period. Who it is not for: anyone who needs the woman to have her own voice. The film proceeds almost entirely through the man's mind, and Gloria remains largely the one being watched.
