What The Phantom of Liberty Is About
Before a scene ends, a figure in the background is picked up and the film continues with them. This happens ten times and no story is completed. The film uses that structure as a method rather than a game; each section inverts a social rule: eating is private, the lavatory is communal, death is ordinary. The narrative explains nothing at any point and offers the audience no relief. Luis Bunuel directed, writing the screenplay with Jean-Claude Carriere. Who it's for: those who like surrealist cinema and structures that break the rules. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a story to follow; the film deliberately withholds one.
