What Tristana Is About
An orphaned young woman moves into the house of the elderly gentleman who becomes her guardian, and over time the relation between them inverts. Luis Bunuel does not build it as revenge, and does not present her hardening as a victory so much as a consequence. Fernando Rey plays a man who considers himself progressive, which is precisely where the comedy comes from. The streets of Toledo are used almost documentarily. There is very little of Bunuel's usual dream material here, which is why some consider it his plainest and possibly his cruellest film.
