What Lilies of the Field Is About

An unemployed construction worker pulls into a farm in the middle of the desert for water when his car overheats. The farm is run by a group of Eastern European nuns whose formidable mother superior decides that God has sent him to build a chapel out there. He has no such plan. Ralph Nelson turns the standoff into a comedy in which both sides are right in their own terms, and keeps it deliberately small. Sidney Poitier won the Academy Award for Best Actor for this part, the first Black man to take that prize.
