What Soldier in the Rain Is About
Maxwell Slaughter is a large, kindly master sergeant who has built himself an extremely comfortable life inside the army. Young Sergeant Eustis Clay admires him, and an odd friendship forms across the age gap. Clay keeps trying to talk Slaughter into leaving the service and going into business with him, and in the meantime introduces him to Bobby Jo Pepperdine, which lands both men in trouble neither intended. Ralph Nelson made it in 1963 and tries to hold comedy and sadness in the same container. The scenes Jackie Gleason and Steve McQueen play together are what the film is worth watching for.
