What El Dorado Is About

In Granada, Sibilla dances in a squalid cabaret called El Dorado, trying to earn enough to care for her sick child. The boy’s father, Estiria, will neither help nor acknowledge them, for fear of endangering his daughter’s engagement to a wealthy nobleman. That same night the daughter slips away from her engagement party to meet her real lover, a Swedish painter, and Sibilla decides to use what has fallen into her hands. Marcel L’Herbier turns the melodrama into a visual experiment: Sibilla is deliberately left out of focus in the middle of a crowd while everyone around her stays sharp. This was also the first crew ever permitted to film inside the Alhambra.
