What Le Bonheur Is About

The anarchist Philippe Lutcher fires at Clara Stuart, a famous stage and screen actress, and only wounds her. Half out of vanity and half out of curiosity about his motives, Clara speaks in his favour at the trial, and he refuses her pity. After eighteen months in prison the two meet again, and this time they fall in love. Marcel L’Herbier adapted the film from Henri Bernstein’s play, staged in Paris in 1933, and Charles Boyer and Michel Simon carried the same parts from stage to screen. It was very popular on release, though its standing among L’Herbier’s sound films was only granted in the seventies.
