What The Late Mathias Pascal Is About
Mathias Pascal is the only son of a family that was once well off. He marries, and the house becomes unbearable soon enough. When he loses his mother and his baby on the same day he walks out. In Monte Carlo he wins a fortune at the tables. On the way home he reads his own obituary in the paper: a body has been found and taken for his. Marcel L'Herbier's silent French film is the first screen adaptation of Luigi Pirandello's novel. Pirandello had refused an adaptation for years; L'Herbier's refusal to compromise won him over. Ivan Mosjoukine takes the lead. The sets were designed by Alberto Cavalcanti and Lazare Meerson. Because of its length the film was shown in two parts.
