Peter Sohn’s 2023 animation is set in a city where fire, water, earth and air peoples live in separate quarters; Ember, of fire, and Wade, of water, cannot even touch. The film does not hide its allegory. The real tension is not the romance but a father expecting the shop to pass to his daughter while Ember cannot say what she wants. Sohn’s parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and ran a Bronx grocery store. Ember and Wade do not work like ordinary animation. Pixar visual effects supervisor Sanjay Bakshi says Ember’s flames were a real simulation pushed toward hand-painted images by a machine learning method, Volumetric Neural Style Transfer. Emotion reads through colour and density rather than drawn line. It premiered at Cannes on 27 May 2023 as the closing film. Box Office Mojo puts the opening weekend at 29.6 million dollars and the domestic total at 154.4 million, more than five times that; worldwide, 496.4 million. Its single Oscar nomination was Animated Feature Film; the award went to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. A good fit if you watch knowing fire and water are genuinely simulated every frame, and will read colour and density instead of facial expression. Not for anyone wanting the allegory implicit: the film names migration, family debt and mixing outright.
