What Elina: As If I Wasn't There Is About
In rural Sweden in the early fifties, Elina goes back to school after recovering from tuberculosis, the illness that killed her father a few years earlier. Her family belongs to the Finnish speaking minority in Sweden, which the strict schoolmistress does not tolerate, and when Elina questions her authority the woman corners her step by step. Her mother, her sister and a young teacher all try to get between them. Elina takes her comfort from walking out onto the dangerous marsh to talk to her dead father. Klaus Härö's film shows how a language minority was pressed down inside a school, entirely from a child's point of view. Bibi Andersson is in the cast.
