What Never Alone Is About
1942. Finland is allied with Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union. An elderly man, one of the leading figures of the Jewish community in Helsinki, tries single-handedly to stop the state police from secretly handing Austrian Jewish refugees over to the Gestapo. Klaus Härö’s film is about the deportation of eight refugees from Finland and about Abraham Stiller’s effort to prevent it. It is the first time the subject has been taken up in cinema; its producer says it stayed too painful for both the state and the wider society to speak about for a long time. Härö wrote the screenplay with Jimmy Karlsson, and Ville Virtanen takes the lead. It screened at Tallinn Black Nights in 2024 and opened in Finland in January 2025.
