Roberto Menescal What Elis & Tom: It Had to be You Is About
Jom Tob Azulay's 2023 Brazilian documentary is made of studio footage from an album recorded in Los Angeles in 1974. The two musicians had not worked together before; they were brought together for the recording and the process was filmed. The footage went unused for forty-five years. Restored and rearranged, what emerges is not a concert record; it shows how the songs were built, which arrangements were tried and abandoned, and how the two got used to each other. The tension lies in the difference between them. One is meticulous and quiet, the other impatient and direct; their working methods clash and the clash stays in the recording. The album became one of the most cited works in Brazilian music. Who it's for: those interested in Brazilian music and studio recording. Who it's not for: viewers expecting biographical information; the film takes place almost entirely in the studio.
