What Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things Is About
Ella Fitzgerald was a fifteen year old living on the street when she won a talent contest at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem in 1934. Within months her name was known, and over the six decades that followed her voice turned both the griefs of her own life and the troubles of her time into something else. The documentary follows that road from beginning to end, treating touring in the harshest years of segregation, dealing with the record companies and staying on stage as parts of the same story. The recordings, her own voice and the accounts of the people who worked with her all sit side by side. Leslie Woodhead’s eighty nine minute documentary was completed in 2019.
