What Encore Is About
The film is adapted from three stories by W. Somerset Maugham. The parts are called The Ant and the Grasshopper, Winter Cruise and Gigolo and Gigolette. Each part was directed by a different person: Pat Jackson, Anthony Pelissier and Harold French in that order. Different writers prepared the screenplays as well. The work is the last of a trilogy of Maugham adaptations, preceded by Quartet and Trio. All three parts look at people getting into trouble through their own dispositions. The account keeps to the scale of the short story and does not tie the parts together. Glynis Johns and Nigel Patrick appear in the eighty nine minute British film by Harold French, Anthony Pelissier and Pat Jackson, completed in 1951.
