Enigma

The documentary sets two women beside each other: two names whose identities were argued over in public and who each took their own road. April Ashley openly claimed her transgender history and was remembered as a trailblazer for it. Amanda Lear, for decades, deliberately left her history unclear and denied it. The film does not score the choice of one against the other; it shows how different roads came out of the same pressure. The account rests on what the women say themselves. Other women who walked a similar road over the years come in between them, and it becomes clear that there is no single correct way to have handled it. Zackary Drucker’s ninety four minute documentary was completed in 2025.
