What Equinox Flower Is About
Hirayama is a businessman with modern opinions. At weddings he speaks warmly about young people choosing for themselves, and he is generous with advice about other men's daughters. Then his own daughter Setsuko announces she intends to marry a man she chose, and the same person digs in for no reason he can articulate. The question stops being about marriage and becomes about a father's pride, while the women around him quietly box him in. Ozu's first film in colour, and he places red so precisely that a kettle anchors a scene.
