Erendira

Erendira is a young girl, and in the middle of a surreal vision her grandmother’s house catches fire and burns to the ground. The grandmother holds her responsible and forces her into prostitution to work off the damage. The visions continue while the grandmother grows rich on the exploitation. Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote the screenplay from his own novella and Ruy Guerra directed. Irene Papas plays the grandmother and Claudia Ohana plays Erendira, with Michael Lonsdale as Senator Onesimo Sanchez. The Mexican, French and West German co-production competed at Cannes in 1983 and was released on 12 September that year. The source is one of the Garcia Marquez novellas that sets innocence and exploitation side by side, and the film keeps that pairing intact.
