What The Unscrupulous Ones Is About

Ruy Guerra's first feature, generally counted among the starting points of Cinema Novo in Brazil. Learning that his rich father is close to bankruptcy, the spoiled Vavá enlists his friend Jandir in a scheme for quick money: they will photograph Leda, his uncle's lover, and blackmail him with the pictures. The film presents this not as an escapade but as something two men do to a woman, and it makes nobody appealing. The beaches of Rio and the convertible signify emptiness here rather than wealth. The scene with Norma Bengell was the first full frontal nude scene in Brazilian cinema, and the film was heavily censored and cut on release. It went to Berlin.
