What Ermo Is About
Ermo, who makes noodles in a remote Chinese province, feels that her family and her neighbours have always treated her as labour ready to hand. To show them what she is, she decides to bring home the biggest and most expensive television she can find, without counting how many bowls of noodles that will take. The film gives the purchase not as a matter of desire but as a matter of standing, and does not hide how far the woman drives her own body. The account sets side by side the changing measure of value in the village, who is looking at what, and who is doing how much work. Ai Liya plays the lead in Zhou Xiaowen’s ninety eight minute Chinese film, completed in 1995.
