What Escape from East Berlin Is About
Set in East Berlin shortly after the Wall went up, the film follows Kurt Schröder and his family as they dig a tunnel toward West Berlin, where every obstacle in the underground passage puts the lives they lead above ground at risk too. Robert Siodmak directed it from a real escape: in early 1962 Erwin Becker, a chauffeur in the car pool of the East German parliament, led twenty eight other people through a tunnel into West Berlin, and he served as technical adviser on the production. The American West German co-production was shot roughly a year after the Wall was built, making it one of the first films to put the subject on screen. Don Murray, Christine Kaufmann and Werner Klemperer star in the ninety six minute picture.
