What Eternal Winter Is About
December 1944. Soviet soldiers arrive in a Swabian village in southern Hungary and collect the women of working age, telling them it is a few weeks of labour. Iren says goodbye to her six-year-old daughter and gets on the train. Where they arrive is a labour camp in the Donbas, and the work is coal mining. A few weeks turns into years. Attila Szasz made the first feature about the hundreds of thousands of Hungarians taken east for forced labour after the war. There is a closeness that forms inside the camp, and the film refuses to romanticise it; it shows what surviving there actually required. Marina Gera won the International Emmy for best actress in the role.
