What Home Coming Is About
Mustafa and his wife are two workers on the edge of Istanbul with no interest in politics; the gunfire in the streets at night is only noise to them. When they wake on the morning of 12 September 1980 to news of the coup, Mustafa is almost relieved, taking it to mean that order has arrived. Then their landlord denounces him, the house is raided, and he is held for twenty-two days and tortured as a man he is not, one code-named Sehmuz. Ömer Uğur lived through those years himself and softens nothing. With Sibel Kekilli and Memet Ali Alabora in the leads, the film tells the coup from inside a single household rather than as a history lesson.
