Even If This Love Disappears Tonight

A film set in a Korean high school. Jae-won is a quiet student. He talks to nobody and tries not to be noticed. His friends play a trick on him. They tell him to ask out a girl in the class. The girl is Seo-yoon. Jae-won asks and she accepts. But she sets a condition. There are rules: no meeting after school, no telephoning, and some things are never to be asked. Jae-won agrees. From there the film is a story of looking for a reason. The boy tries to learn why the rules exist. The reason is this: she loses her memory every night. She was in an accident. New memories do not become permanent and every morning she does not remember the day before. She keeps a notebook. She writes the day each evening and reads it in the morning. Jae-won starts writing too. She knows him each morning from the notebook. What the narrative is interested in is not illness but a record: its idea is that a relationship can continue without being remembered, and that what keeps it going is writing. There is her closest friend as well. She is the one who built the whole arrangement, and her part opens in the second half. A piece of information arrives at the end and the whole business of the notebook takes on another meaning. The structure is familiar. The narrative follows a known shape and signals from the start where it will put its surprise. The source is the Japanese novel of the same name; the book was also filmed in Japan in 2022 and this Korean version is a remake of it. The running time is a hundred and eight minutes. It opened on 24 December 2025 and went to a streaming platform on 4 February 2026. Choo Young-woo, Shin Si-ah and Cho Yu-jung are in the cast. Kim Hye-young directed. Who it is for: anyone who likes Korean and Japanese youth melodrama. Who it is not for: anyone looking for novelty; the narrative applies every convention of the genre in turn and its emotional effect rests wholly on the final section.
