What Everybody Leaves Is About

In Cienfuegos in the eighties, eight year old Nieve is caught in the middle of her parents' fight over custody. Her mother is an artist, her stepfather a Swede working on nuclear plant construction in Cuba, and her father a playwright writing propaganda theatre in a remote corner of the country. The child tries to make sense of all of it by writing it into her own diary. Sergio Cabrera's 2015 film is adapted from Wendy Guerra's autobiographical novel and looks at the Cuba of the period through a child, which is the one vantage point where slogans do not work. It was Cabrera's return to features after a ten year gap.
