Everything for Sale

A film is being shot, but the leading actor does not turn up on set. The crew waits, then starts looking for him. The people who know him talk one by one: his wife, the director, his friends, the actors he worked with. The missing man is never seen, and after a while the searchers start telling their own lives. The line between the film and reality disappears. Andrzej Wajda made this film for Zbigniew Cybulski, the lead of Ashes and Diamonds. Cybulski died in a train accident in 1967. Wajda had the actors play under their own names and turned the process of shooting into the film itself; it counts as the best known Polish film about filmmaking. Daniel Olbrychski, Beata Tyszkiewicz and Elżbieta Czyżewska are in the cast. It was Poland's Oscar submission.
