What Exams at Any Odd Time Is About
The film is built from two stories tied together by shared characters, and the same matter stands in both: the clash between the honesty of children and the calculating minds of adults. While the grown ups think of their own advantage and their ambitions, the children will not stop telling the truth, and that produces constant tension at home and at school. The account does not bring the matter to a conclusion, because the clash has no solution either. The film speaks from within Bulgarian children’s cinema of the seventies. The director does not present the children as small adults; their persistence brings out how fragile the arrangement built by the grown ups really is. Ivanka Grubcheva’s seventy minute Bulgarian film was completed in 1974.
