Arie and Chuko Esiri's 2021 Nigerian film tells the stories of two people in Lagos in separate parts. Mofe is a technician at a factory and Rosa works as a hairdresser; both plan to leave for Europe. The film does not centre the dream of migration. The narrative shows the everyday obstacles in the way of that plan: funeral costs, rent, the price of forged papers and family debts. No section contains a moment of large decision. It was shot on sixteen millimetre and Lagos is shown in detail. The two lines cross only briefly. The narrative ends without announcing an outcome and stands between hope and acceptance. Who it's for: those who like African cinema and quiet social drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting dense plotting; the film proceeds through everyday detail.
