What Face of a Fugitive Is About
Jim Larsen breaks loose while being taken to prison by train. His brother comes to help, shoots a deputy during the escape, and is killed himself, which leaves Larsen wanted for a killing he did not commit. He puts on the suit his brother brought, walks into the town of Tangle Blue as a mining company inspector named Ray Kincaid, and talks his way into work alongside the local sheriff while the wanted posters travel toward him. Paul Wendkos made it early in his career from a 1950 Peter Dawson story, with one of Jerry Goldsmith's first scores and James Coburn in a small, sharp part. Fred MacMurray plays the whole thing on the tension between running and staying.
