What The Case Against Brooklyn Is About
A policeman newly come to the job stands up to criminals who keep the local government in their pocket. What faces him is not only a gang but the web of relations that protects it, so the question is less who the criminal is than whom he can trust. The film works with the moulds of film noir: night photography, hard light and the growing isolation of its hero. The account does not show the institution as wholly rotten either; it shows what cleaning it costs. The young officer’s inexperience both puts him in danger and keeps him owing nothing to anyone. Darren McGavin plays the lead in Paul Wendkos’s eighty two minute American film, completed in 1958.
