The Burglar

Paul Wendkos's 1957 American film, from David Goodis's screenplay adapted from his own novel, follows a three-person crew coming apart after a jewel robbery. Nat protects Gladden, whom he grew up with; the other members see her as a threat. What makes it interesting is not the robbery but what follows: people who cannot get away, cannot divide the money and cannot trust each other, waiting. Wendkos's visual language is unusual among the noirs of its period; the mirrors, sharp angles and the editing in the funfair sequence stand out. Jayne Mansfield plays a role outside her star image. The narrative is uneven and some transitions crude. Who it's for: viewers interested in film noir and adaptations of David Goodis. Who it's not for: anyone wanting an orderly story, or who dislikes bleak endings.
