What Family First Is About

JP shares a small apartment in Verdun with his brother Vincent, his mother Joe and his girlfriend Mel. He walks a tightrope every day, balancing the endless needs of a family he feels responsible for, the debt collecting he does with his brother, and his part in the drug operation run by the uncle he treats as a father. Sophie Dupuis wrote and directed the eighty seven minute Canadian film, and she tells the everyday violence of that Montreal neighbourhood from inside a family rather than turning it into spectacle. Jean-Simon Leduc, Théodore Pellerin and Maude Guérin star. It opened on 9 March 2018, and at the Canadian Screen Awards Guérin won best actress while Pellerin was named revelation of the year.
