What Underground Is About
Maxime is a young worker in a gold mine near Val-d’Or in Quebec. Guilt he carries from an accident in the past will not let go of him, and it is why he questions what he has understood by being a man. The tight solidarity among the men underground is what keeps him standing. Then there is an explosion below, and Maxime goes down with the rescue party, meaning to bring every one of his workmates up alive. Sophie Dupuis’s ninety seven minute Canadian film uses mining not as a backdrop but as the place of the body and of friendship.
