Our Girls

Mike van Diem's 2025 Dutch film begins after a serious accident involving the daughters of two families. Whose fault it was, who knew how much and whether the story being told is what actually happened: the film advances by delaying clear answers to these. What it is really about is how far a parent will go to protect their own child, and what that does to someone else's. The two families stand together at first, then fall onto opposite sides, and differences of class and of legal power come into play. Van Diem chooses to tighten the moral tension gradually and lets none of his characters be wholly right or wholly wrong. The performances of Thekla Reuten and Fedja van Huêt carry the film's balance. Who it's for: viewers who like European drama about family and moral choice. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a definite answer and a sense of justice; the film offers neither.
