What Tulipani: Love, Honour and a Bicycle Is About
A Dutch farmer loses his land in the floods of 1953 and decides he is done with wet feet. He gets on a bicycle, pedals all the way south to Italy, and sets about growing tulips in the punishing heat of Puglia. Doing the thing everyone said could not be done turns him into a local legend. Mike van Diem, who won the foreign language Oscar for Character, directs a tall tale that keeps travelling between the Netherlands and Italy. Ksenia Solo and Giancarlo Giannini are in the cast. The exaggeration is deliberate, because the subject is not so much what happened as how a town tells it afterwards.
