What Famine-33 Is About
The film tells of the great famine of 1932 and 1933 in Ukraine through the six members of the Katrannyk family. The forced collection of grain from the villages, the sealing of the barns and the ban on people leaving their villages are all shown; death is given not as a statistic but as something that happens one person at a time inside a house. The account leans on images rather than words and is shot in black and white. Ukraine treats this famine, the Holodomor, as a genocide, and many states have accepted the same term, while the argument over the word continues among historians. Oles Yanchuk’s ninety two minute film was adapted from Vasyl Barka’s novel and completed in 1991, the year of independence.
