What Fanny Is About
After Marius sails away, Fanny discovers she is pregnant. Her mother and Cesar, Marius's father, persuade her to accept the proposal of Panisse, a wealthy merchant thirty years her senior who will give the child his name. She accepts because there is no other route open to her. It comes from the second play of Marcel Pagnol's Marseille trilogy, and Daniel Auteuil shot both of his films in the same period, playing Cesar himself. Not to be confused with the 1932 adaptation. Few films state a woman's lack of choice this plainly.
