What Father Soldier Son Is About
Two New York Times journalists, Leslye Davis and Catrin Einhorn, filmed Sergeant First Class Brian Eisch's family for ten years. Eisch was raising two sons on his own when he was badly wounded in Afghanistan, and coming home permanently altered the balance in that house. The camera stays with the boys through adolescence, with the father's reckoning with his body and with his identity as a soldier, and with the silence that grows in the rooms. There is a loss in it too, and from that point the film stops being a war documentary. It neither salutes nor pities; what it has is what only ten years of looking can give. It won the editing award at Tribeca in 2020 and went out on Netflix the same year.
