What Feet First Is About

Harold Lloyd's first full talkie, directed by Clyde Bruckman. Harold is an ambitious shoe salesman who meets the boss's daughter, introduces himself as a leather tycoon, and spends the rest of the picture keeping that lie upright, first inside the store and then aboard a ship out of Honolulu. Trying to deliver a letter, he ends up dangling from the scaffolding of a building many storeys above the street. That climb is the sound era sibling of the clock sequence in Safety Last, and the interesting thing about Lloyd's man here is that he risks his neck out of embarrassment rather than courage. It also doubles as a test of whether silent comic rhythm survives the new technology.
