What Femmes femmes Is About
Hélène and Sonia, two actresses sharing a flat in Paris, have left their best years behind. One still tries to find work in the theatre and on television, the other stays at home sewing dresses for a client or two; both are drinking, and the distance between them and reality slowly widens. Through the day they play their old parts, perform scenes for each other, and the line between what is imagined and what is remembered is rubbed out; paying the rent, meanwhile, becomes real again every month. Paul Vecchiali’s hundred and fifteen minute French film was completed in 1974; Pier Paolo Pasolini saw Hélène Surgère and Sonia Saviange in it and cast them both in Salò.
