Séverine Vincent What Once More Is About
In Paul Vecchiali’s 1988 French film, Louis has an orderly life: a wife, a small daughter, work. In middle age he realises he is gay and has to build everything again from that fact. The film refuses to reduce this to a single scene of disclosure; it follows the years instead, showing how attachments form and come apart, and how the epidemic arriving at the end of the 1980s cuts across that life. Vecchiali was one of the independent and prolific figures of French cinema, and he took the subject up at a point when most productions were still nowhere near it. Jean-Louis Rolland plays Louis.
