Fever Pitch

Paul teaches in London and Arsenal is the centre of his life: every match, every table, every superstition. As his relationship with his colleague Sarah develops she gradually works out that she is not the one setting the calendar in this man's life. The story runs alongside the 1988-89 season and that famous night at Anfield when the league was decided in the final minute. David Evans made it from a screenplay Nick Hornby adapted from his own book, which is not a novel but his memoir about supporting a club. Colin Firth plays Paul without trying to defend him, so exactly how insufferable the character can be stays visible. You do not have to love football, but you do have to recognise attachment at that pitch. Who it is for: viewers who like British romantic comedy and stories about football supporters. Who it is not for: anyone who will take no pleasure at all in the football.
