What What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy Is About
Hans Frank was Governor-General of occupied Poland; he was tried at Nuremberg and executed. Otto von Wächter governed the district of Galicia and fled after the war. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the territories the two of them administered. The documentary brings their sons together: Niklas Frank rejects his father outright, while Horst von Wächter will not accept that his father was guilty. There is a third man in David Evans's film: the human rights lawyer Philippe Sands. Most of Sands's own family was killed in that region, and the film takes the two sons there with him. The telling does not censor Horst's defence; it sets the documents in front of him. In the end nobody changes their mind, and the film does not hide that.
